Summer Entertainment

I've received some calls from summer entertainers promoting their programs. Here are some that might be of interest to you.

Rick Huddle, Comedian
"Arghh!" is a mixture of improvisation, storytelling, music, and audience participation.

Come along on a pirate beach adventure. We'll battle sea monsters and land lubbers, befriend parrots, and sing shanties. But how will we confront our biggest challenge- a new place to live and mysterious neighbors?

(Rick resides in Portland but will be in Madison and Green Bay this summer).

Kevin Hubbard, Classical guitarist
The program, entitled Classical Guitar with a Taste of Jazz, ranges from one to two hours in length, depending on what the library would like. It features classical pieces from various eras by composers from Europe (Spain & Italy in particular), Asia, and the Americas, jazz standards, folk songs, and originals that combine classical with other styles such as jazz, blues, and folk. It includes a brief spoken history of the guitar, composers' backgrounds, anecdotes, and an occasional joke. I generally charge $350 dollars for a concert.

Book Reviews

Spellbinder
By Helen Stringer

Belladonna Johnson can see ghosts ~ not something she wants to blab about all over the school. It's pretty much a pain, until her parents die in a car crash. Then, instead of being gone for good, they're still at home taking care of Belladonna ~ only in ghost form. Until one day, they're not. In fact, all the ghosts are disappearing. "Tell the Spellbinder," one ghost tells her. Now it's up to Belladonna and her trouble-making friend, Steve, to find out what's happening to the ghosts and bring back her parents so they're not gone again ~ this time forever.

A Season of Gifts
by Richard Peck

I haven't read "A Year Down Yonder" by Richard Peck but will have to now that I have met the character of Mrs. Dowdel in this wonderful book about a preacher's family who move next door to the crotchety old woman. Mrs. Dowdel doesn't "neighbor" or hold with church going but manages to befriend and support each member of the family in her own way. Fabulous story and a great holiday read for all ages!

Free PSA Available for National Library Week

To promote National Library Week 2010, a free customizable public service announcement (PSA) featuring award-winning author Neil Gaiman is now available. Gaiman, the 2009 Newberry Medal winner for "The Graveyard Book," will appear in both a print and a radio public service announcement (PSA). Gaiman’s love of libraries and librarians is no secret, as his many fans and Twitter followers know.

The PSA can be downloaded for free at www.ala.org/nlw. The PSA reminds library users of all the resources the library offer and how libraries are of key importance in tough economic times. To have the PSA customized with their library’s logo, librarians are asked to send a print quality logo file, their library name and URL to: ala@atigraphics.com. The PSA will be sent to the library in 1-2 weeks.

Other materials are currently available in both English and Spanish, focusing on the 2010 National Library Week theme ―Communities thrive @ your library. They include a proclamation, sample press release and letter-to-the-editor, as well as scripts for use in radio public service announcements (PSAs). Libraries can download materials at www.ala.org/nlw.
Libraries planning to participate in ―Communities thrive @ your library-themed programming are encouraged to share their stories with the Campaign for America’s Libraries, by sending an e-mail to: atyourlibrary@ala.org.
