Miss Cindy Sleeps on Library Roof

On August 9, Cindy Tuschy of the Gillett Library spent the night on the library's roof. That's what the summer reading program kids voted for her to do if they met their reading goal, and they did!

Because it was Cindy’s birthday, the community celebrated with her in the evening before she made the climb.

Despite the early rain, lots of patrons came out to wish her a happy birthday and brought her goodies to survive the night  (including cappuccino, homemade cookies, McDonald's french fries, and bananas, to name a few).

Other community members honked their horns as they drove by.  Cindy survived the night and even woke up with a smile!

You can view more photos of her roof sleepover here

Book Reviews

The Cazuela that the Farm Maid Stirred
by Samantha R. Vamos

I love bilingual books that integrate Spanish words into an English text, and this one does it extremely well. The story starts out with the "this is the house that jack built..." construction but varies it at the end in an interesting way. Rafael López's illustrations are like going to a party - bright, bold, colorful - joyous. I wanted to dance with la campesina y sus animales at the end! Lovely book.

- Karla Giraldéz, BCL - Southwest

Prom and Prejudice
Elizabeth Eulberg

This was a delight! This is a modern version of 'Pride and Prejudice' set in a fancy prep school on the east coast. Eulberg does an entertaining job of assigning modern characters to the "originals" and she hits both the moods and the class system right on. Terrific!

- Elizabeth Timmins, Muehl Public Library

Future Themes Chosen

The artwork for the 2013 underground theme was unveiled at CLSP annual meeting although it cannot be released publicly yet.  The slogans for next summer are Early Literacy/Children's: Dig Into Reading, Teen: Beneath the Surface, Adult: Groundbreaking Reads.

The 2014 Collaborative Summer Library Program slogans for the science theme were voted on this week at the CLSP annual meeting.
They are as follows:
Early Literacy/Children’s: “Fizz, Boom, Read!”
Teen: “Spark a Reaction”
Adult:  “Literary Elements”

The general theme for 2015 will be heroes.

Editor of the CSLP manual, Patti Sinclair, shared lots of manual ideas in the morning.  After lunch, librarians gathered in groups and Cindy Tuschy from Gillett provided even more cool ideas for summer. The day ended with this year's entertainer, "Miller & Mike," presenting a sampling of their summer program.  It was a fun and eventful day!

Book Reviews

The Story of Us
By Jay Asher, Carolyn Mackler
What would you change if you knew what would happen in your future?  That's the question Emma and Josh have to face when Emma loads AOL onto her computer for the first time and finds an amazing site called Facebook - a site that won't be invented for another 15 years and shows what their lives will be like at age 31. Josh's future looks like he has it all, but Emma's future self isn't happy.  The foreknowledge shapes their choices and their relationship with each other.  This book really made me think about my own life choices.  Very cool premise.

Back of the Bus
by Aaron Reynolds
A re-telling of the Rosa Parks story from the eyes of a small boy who doesn't understand what is going on but knows that it is something big.  The boy plays with a simple marble on the bus - a "brown tiger's eye" that "hunkers...down deep into [his] pocket.'' The illustrations are soft and luminous.  I love how the author describes the eyes of the boy's mother, saying, "She's got them worked-all-day eyes, but she's got her strong chin on."  Later, he describes the eyes of Rosa Parks as "all fierce like a lightnin' storm...her voice is all soft, but she's got on her strong chin too, just like Mama's." Lovely and lyrical.

April and Esme Tooth Fairies
By Bob Graham

I love Bob Graham's illustrations.  I love that the dad has long hair and the mom has tattoos.  I think it's great for kids to see all kinds of parents represented in picture books.  I'd love to visit April and Esme's toothfairy house so wonderfully depicted in our modern world.  This is a very cool book!

Perfect Square
By Michael Hall

The square was perfectly happy being a square until it was cut, torn, shredded, shattered, crumpled, ripped and wrinkled.  Each time, it transforms itself into something great: a fountain, a park, a mountain.  Creative, artsy illustrations and a story that is an allegory for living - not just how art can transform but how attitude can, too!

- Karla Giraldéz

25th Annual Children's Book Fest in March

Attention Wisconsin, Minnesota and Upper Michigan librarians, teachers, parents, reading specialists and members of the general public who are interested in learning about the best books for young people!  You are invited to attend Children's Book Fest 2012, a two day conference held at the First Congregational Church of Christ, 135 E. Larch St., Rhinelander, Wisconsin on March 6 and 7.

The ever popular, thoroughly informed and entertaining staff of the Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) in Madison Wisconsin will discuss books for children and young adults at an evening presentation on Tuesday, March 6, as well as at a day presentation on Wednesday, March 7.  Both sessions will include a CCBC exhibit of some of the best 2011 books for young readers.

Most folks choose to attend one session or the other, but you certainly won't be turned away if you decide to stay overnight and come to both

The registration form is available at www.rhinelander.org.
PLEASE NOTE that separate registration (sent to two separate places) is required for the evening and day sessions.

All registrations must be received no later than March 2.  Payment of $10.00 per person must accompany each registration blank. No purchase orders, please.

Telephone inquiries regarding the Wednesday presentation may be made to Tom Hurlburt at the Rhinelander District Library (phone and email below). More information about the Tuesday presentation is available from Headwaters Reading Council member Joan Belongia joan.belongia@gmail.com
