"Dandy Hands" Sample

Barb H. sent me samples of the "Dandy Hands" brochures. This brochure has strategies that facilitate the development of hand function for visually impaired, blind and deaf-blind babies.

Each library will be receiving one via delivery.

Additional brochures in these series are located on the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired website.

NFLS' Adolescent Literacy Workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 18, from 9 am - 3 pm at NFLS. (The same workshop will be held in Waupaca on March 19). Invitations went out last week, or one can be downloaded from our website.

NFLS librarians who sign up to attend by March 2 and attend the entire workshop will be eligible to win a Barnes and Noble tote bag and $10 gift card. (So far three people from NFLS are registered!)

This workshop is partially funded by the DPI and is part of a STATEWIDE initiative. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to host a workshop, so please take advantage of this! Please encourage media or reading specialists in your neighboring schools to also attend.

SRP Workshop Huge Success!

The SRP Planning Workshop was held on Thursday, February 12 at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts in Green Bay. About 45 people attended and were able to "Be Creative" before the summer madness hits. Art and music was abound!

Live music was played during registration. Presenters Mary Driscoll, Barb Husch, Karla Giraldez, Cindy Tuschy and Anne Meade did a fantastic job! Everyone walked away with lots of ideas, as well as goodie bags with a pin and kazoo!

Lunch was provided in the "Signature Lounge," where dozens of autographed signatures were seen in the tables and on the walls.

After the workshop was finished, about 20 people stayed for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Weidner Center. Particpants got to stand on the Cofrin Hall stage and pretend to "pretty" themselves in the chorus dressing rooms.

It was a very fun and creative day!

Some of Mary's handouts, as well as her powerpoint, are available to download on the NFLS Youth Page. Watch for more to come!

Karla's Reviews

Ten Things I Hate About Me
Randa Abdel-Fattah

Jamila hides all evidences of her Muslim Lebanese culture in order to fit in at school as Jamie. But it becomes increasingly difficult to explain to her "friends" why she can't do the things they do... hang out with boys, be out after dark, attend dances, etc. Then she meets someone online who seems to understand and like the real Jamila. Will she have the courage to reveal herself at school? And will her father ever trust her enough to loosen her restrictions? A little predictable, but still an enjoyable book about a teen struggling to fit in. It is nice to read books about normal Muslim teens, their lives and families.

Born to Read
Judy Sierra
Sam is born knowing how to read and uses his skills in a variety of ways, finally rescuing the town from the clutches of a spoiled baby giant and proving the value of being a reader.
This is a cute, rhyming read for younger school-age kids about the power of reading. It's a little long to do in a preschool storytime, in my opinion, but definitely a good read-aloud for a library class visit!

CSLP Adult SLP Manual

Barb Huntington just sent me a copy of the Adult SLP Manual, "Master the Art of Reading." It was recently finished and not available for distribution with the teen and children's manuals. The intent for the future is to distribute all three manuals at one time.

If your library offers an adult summer library program, I would be glad to make you a copy of the manual. Just let me know!

Celebrate National Wildlife Week

Spring is rapidly approaching and we know that you're
already busy planning lessons and classroom
activities. As you
finalize your schedule,
remember to save time to celebrate National

Wildlife Week, March 16-20, 2009.

Participate in three ways:

1. In your classroom -
Download free activities and service project

ideas for kids and teens, Wildlife Watch lists
of local plants
and animals, and fact sheets
about the benefits of outdoor
play.

2. Personally - Enjoy the wildlife in your community.
Get your
family and friends outside to
for wildlife or participate
in a wildlife habitat project.
Don't forget to share your wildlife photos and stories online:

3. Spread the word - Forward this message to others,
including educators and parents, so they can get
involved
during National Wildlife Week.

Since 1938, National Wildlife Week has increased
awareness about
wildlife conservation and the
benefits of spending time outdoors.

Research shows that a daily Green Hour (unstructured time outdoors)
improves one's physical, mental and emotional
well-being. Be out
there.

Starting March 1, visit the National Wildlife Week website to get your
free resources:

Eliza Russell, Director of Education
