Adolescent Literacy Workshop

The Adolescent Literacy Workshop, help March 18, had a great turn out! Speakers Nicole Strang, Connie Abert, Jill Sharp, Donna Young, Pat Peters and Kym Buchanan did an excellent job.

Public librarians, academic librarians and media specialists gathered for the day to talk about this very important topic.

CCBC Workshop in May

Save the date for the CCBC Choices presentation, to be held this year on Thursday, May 21 from 1 - 3 pm at NFLS!

Megan Schliesman and Tessa Michaelson of the CCBC will spend the afternoon talking to us about the most outstanding books out there for children and young adults!

Adolescent Literacy Workshop Incentive!

NFLS' Adolescent Literacy Workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 18, from 9 am - 3 pm at NFLS. (The same workshop will be held in Waupaca on March 19). Invitations went out last week, or one can be downloaded from our website.

NFLS librarians who sign up to attend by March 2 and attend the entire workshop will be eligible to win a Barnes and Noble tote bag and $10 gift card. (So far three people from NFLS are registered!)

This workshop is partially funded by the DPI and is part of a STATEWIDE initiative. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to host a workshop, so please take advantage of this! Please encourage media or reading specialists in your neighboring schools to also attend.

SRP Workshop Huge Success!

The SRP Planning Workshop was held on Thursday, February 12 at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts in Green Bay. About 45 people attended and were able to "Be Creative" before the summer madness hits. Art and music was abound!

Live music was played during registration. Presenters Mary Driscoll, Barb Husch, Karla Giraldez, Cindy Tuschy and Anne Meade did a fantastic job! Everyone walked away with lots of ideas, as well as goodie bags with a pin and kazoo!

Lunch was provided in the "Signature Lounge," where dozens of autographed signatures were seen in the tables and on the walls.

After the workshop was finished, about 20 people stayed for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Weidner Center. Particpants got to stand on the Cofrin Hall stage and pretend to "pretty" themselves in the chorus dressing rooms.

It was a very fun and creative day!

Adolescent Workshop to Be Held March 18!

The invitations for the Adolescent Literacy Workshop, co-sponsored by the DLTCL, are going out next week!

Please plan on attending on Wednesday, March 18, from 9 am - 3 pm, right here at NFLS!

This workshop is appropriate for librarians who work with teens and the important role they play in promoting adolescent literacy.
Our workshop will be the FIRST one in this initiative to be kicked off!

We have a fabulous line-up of speakers who will be talking about adolescent issues, gaming and literacy and adolescent brain development.

Plus, popular YA titles "Someone Like You," "Speak" and "Skinny" will be given away as door prizes.

This March, I will not be planning a "Teen Summer Swap," as NFLS will be hosting an Adolescent Literacy Workshop on Wednesday, March 18! This initiative is partially funded by the DPI.

Statewide assessments of reading achievement show that the proportion of students proficient in reading declines as they move from elementary and middle school to high school.

In May 2008, the Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning launched a multi-year initiative that will champion high-quality teen services and build momentum behind Wisconsin's drive to create the most literate, well-educated citizenry and workforce in the nation.

This Initiative began with a leadership conference on May 15, 2008. The Leadership Conference included system and resource library directors, system youth services liaisons, and teen services librarians, as well as DPI staff and other invited guests.

Thursday, February 12th: Annual SRP Planning Workshop, held at the Weidner Center! Some great sessions are planned, some great prizes will be given away, and you'll have a chance to get a backstage tour!

Wednesday, March 18: Adolescent Literacy Workshop held at NFLS! We will hear from speakers on adolescent brain development, how teens can be successful academically and the connection between video games and literacy. This workshop is part of a state-wide initiative by the DPI.

Thursday, May 21: CCBC Choices Presentation at NFLS! Scheduled for 1 -3 pm.

Save the Date for Summer Planning 2009!

"Whatever Jamie, I need to get through THIS summer before I'll even think about NEXT summer!"

I know, I know, but when it dawned on me that next year's theme was "Get Creative @ Your Library," I thought the Weidner Center (arts, music, dance) would be a great place for the planning workshop!

So....the date is set for Thursday, February 12th, 2009! Things book up far ahead, so I had to secure something now.

I'm still thinking of possible speakers and other ways we can "get creative," but there are TONS of possibilities with students at UWGB, Weidner Center Presents, Inc. or doing a mini performers showcase.

So save the date and stay tuned!
