Nicole's Favorite Children's Book
How many books -- for adults or children -- have inspired dozens of
sequels, countless books that borrow the story or reference it, several
movies (the latest a science fictional version on the SciFi Channel) and
no less than three major stage musicals? L. Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz" is an American cultural touchstone, and my favorite children's book of all time.
The book that initially many librarians refused to stock or recommend
endures as a great read-aloud for children of all ages, full of dry wit
and utter strangeness. I revisit it at least once a year. Forget all of
the wonderful adaptations that have been done since; "The Wizard of Oz" itself is one of the zaniest, funniest and most memorable stories of all time.

Zoomobile Starts Next Week!
The Zoomobile will be making its way around NFLS libraries starting next week and will continue throughout the summer. Just a few reminders...
- Please either reserve a parking space or somewhere close that Brad can park, as he will be transporting animals in your building. Brad will most likely be arriving 15-20 minutes before each performance.
- NFLS will invoice your library after he visits. You do not need to give Brad any payments the day he is at your library.
- You will be emailed the survey via surveymonkey so we can get feedback. Please take the time to complete this.
Any other questions...please ask!

Sign Language Video Available to Download
At the Special Needs Consultants meeting last week, Barb Huntington and Rhonda Puntney showed us the "Catch the Reading Bug" signing video as part of the Collaborative Summer Library Program’s Diversity Committee. They worked with David Haldiman of Intentional Pictures in Janesville and it features Vicky Patterson, sign language and baby sign language teacher of Precious Signs, Incorporated of Green Bay. It is a terrific video demonstrating ASL signs that support the theme.
Click here to take you to the link to download the video. Please be patient for the download, as it is over 10 minutes long!

Former Children's Librarian Retires
There is an article posted on Newsofthenorth.net on Kris Adams Wendt from the Rhinelander District Library. After 34 years, Wendt is retiring as the director but was the children's librarian for 27 of those years.
It's an interesting article on how things changed throughout the decades for her as a children's librarian

“It was a time when children’s departments around the state were relegated—literally—to the basement with cast-off furniture,” she says.and how the Rhinelander community raised money for a new children's area in the library.
